A Silver color and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Per fess enhanced Argent and Gules, issuant from base the top of a pine tree in silhouette of the first charged with a bayonet surmounted by two broadaxes saltirewise of the second, in chief a fountain. Attached above the shield from a wreath Argent and Gules, a badger couchant Proper. Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a Silver scroll inscribed MEN OF THE NORTH in Blue letters.
Scarlet and white are colors of the Corps of Engineers. The heraldic device for a fountain represents the numerous lakes in northern Wisconsin, the battalions home area. The pine tree alludes to the areas name, the Pinery, in the logging and lumbering days of northern Wisconsin. The crossed broadaxes and bayonet represent the historic combat mission of the organization. Wisconsin is known as the Badger State.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 8 January 1957.
